AI assistants

Your family tree in ChatGPT and Claude

Connect FamilyBranch to ChatGPT or Claude and work on your family's tree by asking: add a grandmother born around 1941, find out who was born in Lviv, keep an archive record on a great-grandfather's profile, or make a poster for a birthday. The assistant works in your account, with your role in each family, once you sign in and allow it.

What your assistant can do

Read your trees

Who is in them and how they are related, dates and places, notes, and the birthdays coming up.

Add and change people

Relatives with dates as exact as you know them, partnerships, a portrait, and notes added at the end of a profile without erasing what is there.

Keep family records

Up to 10 links per person to pages about them, such as an archive record or a memorial, and 3 documents, such as a scanned birth record, for relatives who have died.

Make a poster

A PDF to print or a JPEG to share, in any of the four styles, handed over as a download link.

What it can't do

  • See a family you are not a member of, or one whose admin has turned assistants off.
  • Do more than your role allows. If you are a viewer in a family, it can only read there.
  • Add documents for living people. A family member can upload those on FamilyBranch.
  • Get a document's contents from FamilyBranch: it gets the title, the kind, the source and a download link that expires after an hour.
  • Invite relatives, share the tree, or change your plan or billing.

Deleting someone, or replacing a portrait or a profile's notes, is marked as such, so ChatGPT and Claude ask you before they do it.

Connect FamilyBranch

You need a FamilyBranch account. Your assistant asks you to sign in to FamilyBranch, which then shows you what the assistant is asking for. Nothing is shared until you press Allow.

Address: https://familybranch.live/mcp

ChatGPT

  1. Open Plugins in ChatGPT.
  2. Press +, then Add custom MCP server.
  3. Name it FamilyBranch and enter the address https://familybranch.live/mcp.
  4. Keep the sign-in ChatGPT finds (OAuth), confirm with I understand and want to continue, then press Create as a plugin.
  5. In a new chat, type @, pick FamilyBranch, sign in to FamilyBranch and press Allow.

Your ChatGPT plan must allow custom plugins. In a work or school workspace, its admin decides.

Claude on the web and desktop

  1. Open Customize, then Connectors.
  2. Press + Add, then Add custom connector.
  3. Name it FamilyBranch, enter the address https://familybranch.live/mcp and press Continue.
  4. Choose Sign in now and press Add, then sign in to FamilyBranch and press Allow.
  5. In a chat, turn FamilyBranch on under +, Connectors.

Claude's free plan allows one custom connector. On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner adds it for the organisation, and members then press Connect.

Claude Code

Add the server:

claude mcp add --transport http familybranch https://familybranch.live/mcp

Then type /mcp in Claude Code, pick familybranch and sign in.

Once FamilyBranch is listed in the ChatGPT and Claude directories, you can add it from there by name instead. Signing in works the same way.

What it sees, and how to disconnect it

When you connect, FamilyBranch shows you what the assistant is asking for:

  • See your family trees
  • Add and change people in your family trees
  • Stay connected without asking you to sign in again

It sees every family tree you are a member of, including relatives who never joined, and in each family it can do only what your role there allows. It never sees people hidden from the tree.

What you tell your assistant, and what it reads from FamilyBranch, goes to the company that runs it, OpenAI or Anthropic, and is kept under that company's terms. Your relatives are in your trees too: think of them before you connect. The Privacy Policy says what FamilyBranch shares and keeps.

Disconnect an assistant at any time in Connected assistants, in your account settings. It is cut off at once and has to ask you again to get back in.

A family's admin can turn assistants off for the whole family on the Profile page. Then no member's assistant can read or change the family's trees, and those already connected stop at once.

Plans

Assistants work on every plan. What a family can do through one depends on the family's plan, as it does on the website.

Free

No charge

  • One family tree of up to 25 people
  • Posters with a small watermark: A4 PDFs and standard-resolution JPEGs

Family

USD 4 a month or USD 40 a year

  • Unlimited trees and people
  • Posters without a watermark: A3 PDFs and double-resolution JPEGs
  • Birthday reminders for the whole family

On both plans: every poster style, up to 10 links and 3 documents per person, and inviting as many relatives as you like.

A free family's tree that has grown past 25 people, through an import or a subscription that ended, is read-only: an assistant can read it and delete people, but not add or change anyone.

Only a family's admin can change its plan, in FamilyBranch's billing settings. An assistant can't.

How FamilyBranch downloads files

To keep a record or a photo your assistant found online, the assistant gives FamilyBranch the address of the file, and FamilyBranch downloads that one file. A file you give ChatGPT is downloaded from ChatGPT's own file storage in the same way.

  • Only when a member's assistant asks: one file at a time, at most 20 files per member an hour. It never follows links or crawls a site.
  • PDFs and images (JPEG, PNG, WebP and TIFF) of up to 20 MB. It gives up after 15 seconds or 3 redirects.
  • A web page is never read. If the address is a page rather than a file, nothing is kept, and the assistant can save the page as a link instead.
  • Public addresses only, never a private network.
  • Every image is redrawn, so camera and location details are not kept. PDFs are kept as they came.

It introduces itself to the site as:

FamilyBranch-Downloader/1.0 (+https://familybranch.live/assistants#downloads)

If you run a site and want it left alone, block that user agent or write to info@brightitsolutions.biz.
